It actually felt strange to stand there\nwhile they were&nbsp;worshiping but the locals said it was fine as they were\nused to the tourists walking around&nbsp;the temple<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Three Doctrinal Systems of\nTaoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism were practiced by the Cheng Hoon Teng\nTemple. It was the&nbsp;most popular temple of workship for the Hokkien people\nin Melaka.&nbsp;It&nbsp;was&nbsp;built&nbsp;by&nbsp;Lee&nbsp;Wei&nbsp;King,&nbsp;a&nbsp;Kapitan,&nbsp;in&nbsp;1645\nand have been expanded and enhanced by the other Kapitans over the following\ncenturies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This temple was built\nby Chinese expatriates in the early colonial era and it is an art of China on\nforeign territory. When we were there, there were no tourists at all,\napart from us. There are three waist-level censers\nin front of the center door on the ground floor where the prayers&nbsp;put lit\njoss sticks on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few other rooms in other\nBuddhist temples that house Maitreya Buddha and other deities such as the Four\nHeavenly Kings and the Eighteen Lohans. But since Xiang Lin Si is tiny, there\nare no such rooms. They&#8217;re all held in one space instead. You will already be\nin the Buddha Room once you make it past the front gate. The Buddha statue that first welcomed the&nbsp;tourists\nis a tiny smiling statue of Mi-lo Fwo (the Chinese Maitreya, the Future\nBuddha), placed on a brief altar parallel to the front gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eighteen Lohans of Buddhism are lined up at Xiang Lin Si Temple on either side of the Buddha Hall, nine on each side, leading to a much smallerGautama Buddha statue in the middle.&nbsp;The altar to Gautama Buddha, encircled by censers cradling joss sticks, and other offerings such as fruit, bread, and flowers, is of course at the middle of thehall. The temple&#8217;s statue is white.
