{"id":6040,"date":"2019-09-25T17:44:38","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T09:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/?p=6040"},"modified":"2023-09-04T14:34:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T06:34:12","slug":"old-hill-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/2019\/09\/25\/old-hill-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Hill Street Police Station- The Unique Building in Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\nOld Hill Street Police Station (Malay: Balai Polis Hill Street Lama) is a\nhistoric building and former Singapore Police Station, situated on Hill Street\nin the Museum Planning Area, within the Central Area, the central business\ndistrict of Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ads2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5972\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Living Buildings: Old Hill Street Police Station\" width=\"1110\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XuWNkxNTCiU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"history\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Between 1845 and 1856, the Assembly Rooms occupied the\ncurrent site of the Old Hill Street Police Station, a space for public\nfunctions and a building housing a theater and a school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconstruction of the Old Hill Street Police Station is the location of the first\nprison in Singapore. The Singapore Police Force was reorganized after a\nconference of troops at the Alexandra Barracks in 1915. The Singapore Police\nForce constructed several police stations from 1915 to 1935 to cope with\ngrowing Chinese secret society operations as a consequence of the\nreorganization. The steep slopes of Fort Canning had to be cut back and shored\nup in order to provide vehicular access behind the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n1934, G. Sturrock, Director of Public Works and Adviser for Malay States, who\nwas also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA), opened\nthe Hill Street Police Station and Barracks. There were living quarters for\npolice officers and their families in relation to the normal equipment for a\npolice station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- JB2SGADS2 -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1806286982415317\" data-ad-slot=\"4092419990\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthe Japanese occupation, the Kempeitai Police Station used Hill Street as a\nprisoner holding region and some claim as chambers of torture. It returned to\nbeing a police station after the war. Police Department&#8217;s Arms and Explosives\nBranch operated there from 1949 to 1981. A fresh housing system in the 1960s\ngave police staff the choice of living in government-built homes. With the last\noccupant leaving in 1979, police employees gradually moved out. The station was\nclosed two years later and in 1983 the building was renamed Hill Street Building\nafter renovations. It housed the Official Consignor, the Official Trustees, the\nPublic Receiver, and the Department of Archives and Oral History (now the\nNational Archives) and other departments of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nis used today by the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and\nCulture, Community and Youth Ministry. The National Arts Council, the National\nHeritage Board and the Media Development Authority are among the former\noccupants. On 18 December 1998, the construction of the Old Hill Street Police\nStation was gazetted as a national monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name was altered to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Hill_Street_Police_Station\">MITA Building<\/a>&#8221; in 1999 from Old Hill Street Police Station, followed in 2004 by &#8220;MICA Building.&#8221; The name &#8220;MICA Building&#8221; was changed to &#8220;Old Hill Street Police Station&#8221; after the ministry change in November 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"architecture\"><strong>Architecture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Old Hill Street Police Station was constructed in the\n1930s in neo-classical style that was still fashionable for England&#8217;s\ngovernment houses. The building was intended at F by the Department of Public\nWorks. The government architect was Dorrington Ward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\nits corbelled loggias and balconies, arcades, stuccoed, rusticated surfaces and\nmain courtyards, one big and one tiny, the six-story building has a completely\nItalian atmosphere. The proportions of these inner spaces are somewhat\noverwhelming due to the height of the building, but this is a reasonable\nconcept as a solution to the Singapore climate issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/police2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6053\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/police2.jpg 500w, http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/police2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nbuilding has been regarded one of the world&#8217;s finest. It had electric lifts up\nto 1933, modern for its moment. It was the biggest public building in Singapore\nbefore the war when it was completed in 1934 and was considered as a\ncontemporary skyscraper. The house has a total of 927 colorful shuttered\nwindows. The main courtyard, the former parade grounds of the police, has been\ntransformed into an air-conditioned atrium for art activities called The\nARTrium. With its vibrant colors and ample room, the spacious ARTrium\nfrequently features artistic performances and houses galleries of art as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>G.\nSturrock, the Director of Public Works and Counselor of Malay States formally\nopened the building in 1934. Built at a price of $634,263, it contained a\npolice station with a charging room, offices and garages. It also had quarters\nfor 140 married males, 180 single police officers, sub-inspectors as well as\nflats for five Asians and four European inspectors. An interesting reality is\nthat the surrounding region, including the place where the building was\nlocated, was located. However, the Chinese who used to live there believed that\nit disrupted the area&#8217;s good Feng Shui when the building was erected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ads2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5972\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key\">The Key Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nOld Hill Street Police Station is a six-story building covering 25,000 square\nmeters of complete floor area. It was constructed in a typical neoclassical\nstyle during the 1930s that characterized many of England&#8217;s government houses.\nThe fa\u00e7ade is intended symmetrically with balconies, arcades, pillars and rough\nmasonry blocks on the ground. The construction consists of lengthy, slender\nblocks surrounding two inner courtyards. The view from each room faces the\nstreets on the outside and the courtyards on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nbuilding has a total of 927 windows painted in rainbow color colors. The\nprimary courtyard has been transformed into an air-conditioned atrium and a\n29-meter-high glass roof shelters it. It was the largest government\nbuilding at the time of its opening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1935: It was temporarily\nrenamed the Silver Jubilee Building to mark the 25th anniversary of King George\nV&#8217;s reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1942 &#8211; 1945: During the\nJapanese Occupation, the Kempeitai (Japanese Military Police) used the building\nto hold and interrogate suspects. They also painted it a whitish-grey and brown\ncamouflage pattern. The police regained control of the building after the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1984: New occupants moved in,\nwhich included the Board of Film Censors, Oral History and Archives Department\nand the Public Trustees. The building now became known as the Hill Street\nBuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1997: An extensive $82 million\nrestoration project began, to transform the police station into office spaces\nto house the Ministry of Information and the Arts (Mita).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- JB2SGADS2 -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1806286982415317\" data-ad-slot=\"4092419990\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>1998: The building was\ngazetted as a national monument, along with four other buildings, bringing the\ntotal number of national monuments in Singapore to 42 (at the time it was\ngazetted).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2000: The refurbishment was\ncompleted and Mita moved into its new headquarters.
