Top 7 Best Restaurant in KL That Selling the Most Popular Local and Street Food

When a man from Malaysia tells “Jom! Jalan-jalan cari makan (let’s go discover some food) “will generally require a road trip up north to Ipoh and Penang or down south to Malacca in search of a gastronomic affair for their favourite local food. Then again, there’s no reason to drive out of city when Klang Valley provides its own wealth of scrumptious local food so great it’s going to meet any food at core! What to eat in KL for local and street food? This list of restaurant in KL with Best Traditional Food will have you going around city for a “jalan-jalan cari makan” that will fill your bellies all day long and then some. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and all in between!

1. Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea – restaurant in KL

ah weng koh- restaurant in KL - street food

What best food to eat in KL to begin your day? It sure is a a cup of Hainan tea, kaya toast and smooth cooked eggs! This quintessential Malaysian breakfast has been served by Ah Weng Koh for centuries, and I know that for a reality since I came as a young boy. The tea is soft with a powerful but not overpowering flavour. You can choose a bun or traditional bread from Hainan that is either cooked or toasted and then slathered with butter and kaya in this KL restaurant. This breakfast trio is rounded off by the smooth boiled eggs that come served in a steel pot that enables you to determine their doneness level. I suggest a good runny texture for 6 minutes. You’ll have to get used to the gruffy attitude of the employees here for the uninitiated as they move around at high pace and shout in their manner at individuals. They have little tolerance for clients who blindly amble around, but that’s all component of the experience.

2. Sisters Crispy Popiah – restaurant in KL

popiah- restaurant in KL- street food

This is where the first stalls started with your favourite Sisters Crispy Popiah. One of the popular Kuala Lumpur food. The real family members still manage this stall, and yes, it tastes distinct. For one thing, the popiah skin is thicker, not tinted green, and no fancy add-ons are available. This is the initial crispy popiah no-fuss no-frills where the only choice is whether or not you want it to be spicy. Certainly, part of the experience is witnessing how popiahs are produced in this KL food store. The aunty moves up to 10 popiahs at one go in less than a minute at lightning velocity! You get the ideal mixture of sweet and savoury with crunchy pieces all wrapped in a skin just as thick to keep all the ingredients. Located in the same Imbi Market as Ah Weng Koh, they’re open only in the morning or until they’re sold out (usually before midday). One of the best street food to eat in KL.

3. Village Park Nasi Lemak – restaurant in KL

nasi lemak- restaurant in KL- street food

If you’re looking for a hearty and satisfying local food breakfast, with nasi lemak you can’t really go wrong, and with Village Park you can’t go wrong. In my view, despite the outcomes of the latest Food Network Foodwars, this KL restaurant serve the finest Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak in town. The “nasi lemak” (rice infused with coconut milk) is light and fluffy, and the sambal is flavourful and mildly sweet, but there is no doubt that the star on the tray is the chicken. Crispy skin and moist, juicy flesh marinate the chicken with a host of spices and then deeply fry to perfection. Other add-ons such as the sambal sotong (spicy fish) and rendang chicken or beef are also available at this location. There are other noodles and rice choices accessible if you’re not a nasi lemak fan. Be ready to wait as there is always a queue (breakfast or dinner) but their employees are extremely effective so make sure you get a seat as quickly as it’s accessible. This is one of the best local food when you are thinking of what to eat in KL.

4. Foong Foong Yong Tau Fu – restaurant in KL

yong tau fu- restaurant in KL- street food

Ampang is synonymous with Yong Tau Fu, but all flock to and for excellent reason there is one street food store. The fish paste of this KL food store is fresh and has the correct springiness (not fishy like some locations). You must put your order on a piece of paper at the counter where they bring your order in the form of a number string (it’s like a secret code!). Your order will be placed hot on your table and each piece will be generously stuffed. My personal favourite of this street food is their crispy bean curd skill roll on the outside and springy in the centre; dip it in a mixture of sweet and spicy sauce and it’s just yums.

5. Hon Kee Porridge – restaurant in KL

This institution was the time test. This KL food store, which began in 1949, is still going strong and spans 3 generations and counting. What they are most renowned for is their “Sang Yu Chuk” (snakehead fish porridge) that comes with a tiny side of coriander, finely julienned ginger and a bowl of warm porridge piping to your table raw. To cook this famous Kuala Lumpur food, you’ll need to dunk the raw fish into the porridge and decide for yourself how well you want it to be before you begin eating. The fish here is always fresh, and the porridge is really smooth to the palate with a clean taste that enables you to see how well the porridge is cooked. Other kinds of street food are also accessible, such as frog legs, mincemeat and century eggs, meatball, pork intestine, and many more.

6. Sri Nirwana Maju Banana Leaf – restaurant in KL

sri nirwana- restaurant in KL- street food

When I get banana leaf rice cravings, this is where I go. One of the best restaurant to eat in KL.The base banana leaf comes with rice, 3 sides, lime pickle, rasem, papadom, and enough gravy to drill the rice you want. You can select curry, curry or dhal from chicken. In this KL restaurant, there’s one side for everybody and that’s the sour fried gourd. The spices used in the batter are just perfect and you can’t assist but eat one piece after another. It’s crunchy on the outside and smooth in the centre. It’s so addictive that this is the only side without paying you can’t ask for seconds, so ask for more on your first serving! If you feel that the basic is not enough, you can order some of the main dishes, and the fried squid and fried fish are a sure winner. The seafood is fresh, the marinade is on the spot, and everything is fried on order, so you know you’re going to have it on your table, crispy and hot, a must try and eat local food in KL.

7. Balakong Pan Mee – restaurant in KL

balaking pan mee- restaurant in - street food

This corner lot house cum eatery, tucked in an unnamed housing estate, provides a nice soup pan mee, a popular Kuala Lumpur food. It serves the pan mee which is same standard as in KL restaurant. In the “tear shape” (pinch in Chinese) the handmade noodles are best consumed as the parts are just the correct size; not too dense to be too chewy or too thin to feel enough teeth. The soup is a flavoured anchovy-based broth. Unlike any other pan mee you’ve attempted, this pan mee is. One thing you shouldn’t miss is to add to your noodle order the “sui kow” (dumpling). The dumplings are packed with hazelnut meat, carrots and jicama that provides it a little crunch. My private order for this street food is a soup bowl of “tear” noodles with 2 “sui kows” that just fills me up nicely. If you find this location (ordinary) hard to locate, look for an Ambank and it’s right behind it.
