It is a two-building complex\nand a clock tower united by a common corridor; the building&#8217;s oldest portion\nwas first constructed in 1862 and the complex was finished in 1909. The complex\nhas experienced a number of renovations and renovations, most recently in 2010,\nwhen a four-year renovation project closed the complex. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) uses the concert hall as a\nperformance venue, and the complex is managed by The Esplanade Co Ltd. On 14\nFebruary 1992, the Victoria Theater and Concert Hall was published as a\nnational monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First started in 1862 as the\nTown Hall, the Victoria Theater and Concert Hall. A second public hall was\nconstructed next to it in the early 1900s together with a clock tower to create\na bigger complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ads2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5972\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"origin\">The Origin Of Town Hall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally,\nthe Town Hall was constructed to replace the older Assembly Rooms, where local\noperas and dramas took place but fell into disrepair. In 1855 the foundation\nstone was laid, and in 1862 the construction was finished. The Municipal\nEngineer, John Bennett, intended the building. It was constructed during an age\nof Victorian Revivalism then common in Britain, and therefore its design\nreflected this architectural style with Italianate windows, and it was the\nfirst such building constructed in this style in Singapore. Originally, the\ncompleted town hall housed a ground floor theater as well as meeting rooms and\noffices on the second floor of various government agencies. From 1862 to 1876,\nit also housed the Singapore Library. However, the population rise led in a\ngreater demand for entertainment, and the town hall was unable to deal with\ngrowing demand for the use of the building for both entertainment and\nadministrative reasons, so the offices were transferred out of the building by\n1893.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"construction\">Construction Of Victoria\nConcert Hall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/victoria2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6089\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n1901, a public space in memory of Queen Victoria who died that year was chosen.\nIt was then decided. Public funds were collected for its construction amounting\nto $368,000, exceeding the construction costs, leaving a $22,000 surplus for\nthe municipal hall renovation to blend in with the new hall. The foundation\nstone was laid for the celebration of the coronation of King Edward VII on\nAugust 10, 1902, and the new building was built next to the Town Hall between\n1903 and 1905. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major Alexander Murray and the\nDepartment of Public Works initially drafted the plan of the memorial hall,\nwhich included the reconstruction of the front elevation of the old town hall\nalong similar lines to the fa\u00e7ade of the new memorial hall, which was\nsubsequently modified by R. A. J. Swan and Maclaren&#8217;s Bidwell. The hall&#8217;s new\ndesign consisted of a ground floor stage, stalls and pit, and dress circle,\nwalkway, and a gallery on top of the foyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- JB2SGADS2 -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1806286982415317\" data-ad-slot=\"4092419990\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"opening\">Opening of Victoria Memorial Hall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/victoria3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6090\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nVictoria Memorial Hall was officially opened on October 18, 1905 by Sir John\nAnderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements. On February 11, 1909, the\nrefurbished Town Hall was reopened. The Pirates of Penzance was the first\nperformance that took place when it reopened in the renovated building. The\ntown hall has been renamed the theater of Victoria. On February 6, 1919, the\n100th anniversary of the founding of Singapore, a statue by T of Stamford\nRaffles. Woolner shifted to the front of the Memorial Hall from the Padang. A\nfresh semi-circular colonnade and a pool were added to the monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"historical\">The Historical Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nWorld War II, before their successful occupation of the colony, the memorial\nhall was used as a hospital for victims of bombing raids by Japanese forces\nduring the Singapore Battle. During the occupation, even though the colonnade\nwas destroyed and the statue of Raffles moved to the National Museum, the\nbuildings themselves escaped major physical damage. In 1946, the statue was\nbrought back to its initial site. In 1947, the Straits Settlements arms flag\nhung on the tympanum of the building&#8217;s two towers was substituted by the Crown\nColony of Singapore&#8217;s newly created arms coat. It was carried down in 1959 to\ncreate a plaster cast of Singapore&#8217;s Coat of Arms, which was overlapped with\ntwo flagpoles on them with the Singapore Flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\nthe premises, a number of important civic as well as historical activities took\nplace. From 1946 to 1947, the Memorial Hall was the location for trials of war\ncrimes in Japan. The Hall was used as the center for briefing election\nofficials and counting ballot papers during elections from 1948 onwards. It was\nthe site of the founding of the People&#8217;s Action Party on 21 November 1954. The\npilot television broadcasting service of Singapore, Television Singapore, was\nintroduced here on 15 February 1963. In 2006, before the latest renovation, the\nVictoria Concert Hall interior underwent major renovations between 1952 and\n1958, and it was also internally restructured to allow for the installation of\nair conditioning and soundproofing. Following significant renovations,\nSingapore&#8217;s national song, &#8220;Majulah Singapura,&#8221; was first conducted\nat the Victoria Theater in 1958. The Memorial Hall was restored to house the\nSingapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in 1979, when it was renamed the Victoria\nConcert Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ads2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5972\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"refurbishment\">Refurbishment Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"http:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/victoria4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/victoria4.jpg 500w, https:\/\/jb2sg.com\/article\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/victoria4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For\nsignificant renovations, the Victoria Theater and Concert Hall were closed in\nJune 2010. W Architects and Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) Singapore undertook the\nS$180-million renovation as project manager and quantity surveyor with\nArchitectural Restoration Consultants Pte Ltd (ARC) as curator and Arup\nSingapore Pte Ltd as acoustician and theater planner. The renovation had the\nstructures repaired and updated to satisfy current requirements. The buildings\n&#8216; fa\u00e7ade is maintained and certain components belonging to the initial\nstructure of 1905 have been restored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\ninvolves re-establishing the main passage between the theater and the concert\nhall leading to the Arts House. New spaces have been created to accommodate\nconstruction services, commercial rentals and amenities such as a caf\u00e9. While\nthe concert hall&#8217;s important interior features were retained, during the\nrenovations most of the theater (save the fa\u00e7ade) was totally destroyed. For\nthe public, actors and support crew, the building now has additional fresh\nspaces. The theater has fresh changing rooms and a charging bay, while opening\nthe main atrium has become an extra place for hosting arts events. The\ntheater&#8217;s roof level has been raised to match that of the concert hall, and a\nfresh dance studio is housed under the ceiling. However, getting fresh rooms\nwould require some sacrifices. For example, the theater now seats fewer\nindividuals to free up room in what is now the atrium\u2013about 600 out of about\n900 before. The Victoria Concert Hall also initially had a greater ability of 883\nseats, but is now lowered to 673 as an unsightly and intrusive balcony was\nremoved during a previous refurbishment. The theater had a stage of 167.28\nsquare meters in size before its renovation, and the concert hall had a stage\nthat could be extended to 139.76 square meters.
