Introduction of Gunung Ledang National Park
The peak is between Muar and Melaka’s boundary.There are some common views about the origin of the name of the mountain. Ancient history points to the mountain as the site of wealthy gold deposits, luring traders from as far as Greece and China, according to one view. Ophir, also recognized in the Hebrew Bible, was a biblical-era land wealthy with natural resources listed in the Torah. The Chinese seafarers on the Straits of Malacca in the 14th century called it Kim Sua, meaning the ‘ golden mountain, ‘ probably from the words of Hokkien or Taiwan: kim, or in arabic meaning gold and sua, or mountain. Another source said the Javanese named the mountain Gunung Ledang during the era of the Majapahit Empire, meaning ‘ high mountain ‘ from the Archaic Javanese term ledang meaning ‘ show-off.’ British cartographers have been calling it “Ophir” since at least 1801, based on that year’s map. It is believed that the name Ophir itself came from any of these languages.
The mountain is 4186 ft (1276 m) elevated. According to a sign at the entrance to the park, Gunung Ledang is Malaysia’s 64th largest mountain and the 6th hardest to climb, however, as you can see from the more comprehensive list on my Malaysia Mountains page, Ledang is actually only the 134th largest peak and in terms of difficulty it is not in the top 20 peaks.
Be that as it may, it is Johor’s largest mountain and its accessible place, being only a few hours drive from both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which means it is one of Malaysia’s most famous and frequently climbed hills.
Why Gunung Ledang National Park are The Most People Climb

The summit has other paths, particularly one from the Gunung Ledang National Park Office about 5 km from the Gunung Ledang Resort and one from the Melaka side via Asahan. There’s also a path that you can drive up to nearly the top that you can reach through Gate B.
There are different mountain legends that include a magical princess, gold and silver deposits, the renowned Hang Tuah warrior, and more. It is considered a place of spirituality. The Greek term Of Meaning snake is one of the renowned roots of the name Ophir, and some say that the mountain is guarded by legions of snakes. Fortunately, during my visit I didn’t see any snakes, but I found a big monitor lizard scavenging in a litter bin for food scraps. He scattered garbage everywhere in the process.
Visitors to Gunung Ledang National Park sometimes complain about the quantity of litter around, but it’s not always the people who are accountable, as this instance demonstrates. The park management should, of course, install animal-proof litter bins, but, even better, tourists should bring back their garbage. That’s why climbers must declare all their possessions at the Ranger’s office and pay a RM20 rubbish deposit, which can be refunded after the Ranger checks the property at the end of the walk.
I could see the tell-tale digging marks left by wild boars in addition to the monitor lizard. There were also plenty of birds around, there were actually 160 bird species reported here.
Once upon a time, the wildlife was even more exotic at Gunung Ledang National Park. When the famous naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who discovered the boundary between the zoological regions of the East and Australia (Wallace Line), visited Mount Ophir in 1854, he was so enchanted by the place that he spent a week there during which time he noticed the presence of tigers, rhinoceros and elephants.
You must pay RM2 per vehicle and RM1 per individual (RM0.50 for children aged 4-12) to join the park at the entrance to Gunung Ledang National Park Resort. You must register (RM3) and pay RM 13 per adult (Malaysians) or RM 23 (foreigners) on a day trip to climb the mountain.

How to get to Gunung Ledang National Park: exit at Junction 235 from the North-South Expressway and drive to Tangkak. Turn right in the direction of Sagil on Route 23 just after Tangkak.Taman Negara Gunung Ledang will see signs. Take either Gate B (Pintu B) or a big billboard for Gunung Ledang Resort, depending on the door you want. You will have to drive some distance from Gate B through a palm oil property before arriving at the Rangers ‘ Office.
