Travel from Singapore to Malacca A’Famosa

A’ Famosa is a former Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Southeast Asia and the Far East. The Porta de Santiago, a small gate house, is the only part of the fortress which still remains today. Built in 1511, the settlement used to sprawl across a whole hillside. It is set beside the Istana ke Sultanan on Jalan Kota.

The A’ Famosa fortress with 3-meter thick walls and a 40-meter watchtower had played a major role in protecting the Portuguese from their enemies. However, A’ Famosa did not manage to sustain its golden days as the biggest fortress being built by the Portuguese. In 1641, the Dutch landed in Melaka and took over the state from the hand of the Portuguese. As a result, A’ Famosa fell into the hands of the Dutch. Nevertheless, the fortress continued to play its role for the Dutch after it was renovated and rebuilt.
