A Famosa

It’s one of the Malacca’s most historic building. Fortified by thick walls, this Portuguese fortress is something you can’t miss. The tiny gate called A Famosa or Porta de Santiago is a remnant of history that time couldn’t wipe away.  In the early 19th century, the fort was handed over to the British by the Dutch.

The fort was built in 1511, taking its name from what means’ The Famous’ in Portuguese. It was the moment when Portuguese saw Malacca as an significant aspect of their trade. This lasted until 1641 when A Famosa was held by the Dutch. Stamford Raffles effectively saved the tall fort in 1810.

St. Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church is where the ruins are well maintained, the breeze is welcoming and the view from the top makes it worth for you to climb the St. Pauls Hill to wander through the magnificent forests and relics of glory. Steeped in history, this building is one of the Malacca’s oldest historic landmarks.

The church was built in 1521, before which only a chapel was built. They named the church ‘ Igreja de Madre de Deus’ by the end of the sixteenth century. When the Portuguese colonized Malacca in 1511, the Church came into being.

The concept was to build a river-viewed fort. It’s been called A’ Famosa. The busy markets, roads, restaurants and churches went along with that. This was the only structure remaining when the region was assaulted by the Netherlands.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

This temple exudes history from the three teachings of Chinese spirituality to the mesmerizing architecture. It reminds you of Malacca’s Chinese era. It is one of Malaysia’s oldest yet working temples. It is a Buddhist worship centre which is built in 1963. The first thing that catches your eye is the intricately constructed roof with relief pictures of birds, flowers and dragons.
