Built in 1910, the Johor Art Gallery building used to be Johor’s chief minister, Dato ‘ Abdullah Jaafar’s official residence. He was then Johor’s third chief minister. One way to preserve the building’s distinctive architecture was chosen by the government to transform it into an art gallery. The Chief Minister of Johor opened this art gallery at Jalan Petrie close Johor Bahru on 29 January 1994.  Originally, it was used to show Johor’s arts and culture-related historical artefacts. From 2000 to 2003, it was closed for refurbishment. It was decided after its refurbishment in 2003 that the center will serve as a location for art education, collection, display, references, paperwork and artistic creativity. On May 6, 2003, Dato ‘ Haji Abdul Ghani Othman, Johor’s chief minister, reopened this 2-story house to the public.
