It was established by a missionary of the Presbyterian Church of England, Rev John Angus Bethune Cook. This is because in the community there was a big group of Chinese people, most of whom were from the Teochew dialect.

          The old church building was constructed using timber and is presently being used as the Youth Hall and used for Chinese worship meetings earlier. It was only in 1952 that the English service at the Holy Light Church became a major offering. Some 50 years later, the English session would move to the premises in Hillville where the church continues to play a significant part in the development of the state’s Christians as well as a living witness to the individuals in the area about Christ’s authority and teachings.
