Saying that Melaka is one of the most historical towns in Malaysia is revealing only half of its tale. Here we provide top 4 historical Melaka Temple that you should visit!
In this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples are as popular with tourists as they were in the early days of colonial Malacca.
Just look at Malacca’s “Street of Harmony,” officially known as Jalan Tukang Emas but it also known as Malacca’s Jalan Tokong (Temple Street): worshipers from local ethnic groups regularly visit their respective temples.
Melaka Temple Directory
During their corresponding holidays, devotion reaches a peak For instant, Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple becomes a significant focus of local Thaipusam or Deepavali, the same for Kampung Kling Mosque during Ramadan or Cheng Hoon Teng Temple during Chinese New Year.
You don’t have to visit these side-by-side temples during a significant festival. You can just stop by Jalan Tokong which is also known as “Street of Harmony” on any sunny evening to explore each of these locations on your own.
1. Kampung Kling Mosque’s
A wooden house was the initial structure constructed by Indian Muslim traders in 1748 and reconstructed in brick in 1872. The mosque is one of Malacca’s traditional mosques that still maintains its initial layout. Besides, a cross between Sumatran, Chinese, Hindu, and Malacca Malay is the mosque’s unique architectural design. As the primary building was built, the minaret, ablution pool and entrance arch were constructed at the same time. The name of the Kampung Kling mosque is based on the location where Indian traders live in the area known
The minaret looks like a pagoda. The mosque also has a mix of painted English and Portuguese tiles, Corinthian columns with symmetrical arches in the main hall, a Victorian chandelier, a wooden pulpit with Hindu and Chinese-style sculptures, and Moorish cast iron lamp posts in the pre-prayer purification location of ablution.as Kampung Kling.
The Museums and Antiquities Department finished the mosque’s conservation work in the 1990s.
2. Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple
One of the first Hindu temples constructed in Malaysia is Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple. The rectangular temple was opened in 1781 on a plot of land donated back in the day by the religiously tolerant Dutch and characteristics a Dutch style of architecture.
Set close Masjid Kampung Kling (Kling Village Mosque) and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the temple is dedicated to the elephant-headed Hindu deity Vinayagar, which also known as Ganesha. It is located along Harmony Street, a street best known for its religious shrine collection.
The layout of Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple features colorful and ostentatious stone sculptures and animal and Hindu deities figures. The temple is not as grandiose as Masjid Kampung Kling with a faded exterior of peeling Brahmin-blue paint, but the rectangular-shaped structure is still notable.
In the meantime, Vinayagar’s flanking altars are devoted to the dad, mother, and younger brother of the deity (Lord Muruga). The well-known events at this temple include Hindu festivals like the Datuk Chachar Festival and Lord Muruga Festival.

3. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is definitely my favorite among the four temples along Temple Street. It is likely the largest, the most eye-catching, the most intricately designed and the most magnificently decorated. When we were there, I had saw the local people praying and worshiping. Locals gathered for prayer under the leadership of monks. It actually felt strange to stand there while they were worshiping but the locals said it was fine as they were used to the tourists walking around the temple
The Three Doctrinal Systems of Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism were practiced by the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. It was the most popular temple of workship for the Hokkien people in Melaka. It was built by Lee Wei King, a Kapitan, in 1645 and have been expanded and enhanced by the other Kapitans over the following centuries.
This temple was built by Chinese expatriates in the early colonial era and it is an art of China on foreign territory. Craftsmen from Guangdong and Fujian province designed and completed the temple as an example of southern China architecture without any significant local cultural influence.
4. Xiang Lin Si Temple
The Xiang Lin Si Temple is not crowded at all, unlike its neighbour. It stands just a few meters away, nearly opposite Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. When we were there, there were no tourists at all, apart from us. But there were also some locals praying in the temple.
Xiang Lin Si Temple has two stories and three arched doors on each floor. There are three waist-level censers in front of the center door on the ground floor where the prayers put lit joss sticks on.
There are a few other rooms in other Buddhist temples that house Maitreya Buddha and other deities such as the Four Heavenly Kings and the Eighteen Lohans. But since Xiang Lin Si is tiny, there are no such rooms. They’re all held in one space instead. You will already be in the Buddha Room once you make it past the front gate. The Buddha statue that first welcomed the tourists is a tiny smiling statue of Mi-lo Fwo (the Chinese Maitreya, the Future Buddha), placed on a brief altar parallel to the front gate.
The Eighteen Lohans of Buddhism are lined up at Xiang Lin Si Temple on either side of the Buddha Hall, nine on each side, leading to a much smallerGautama Buddha statue in the middle. The altar to Gautama Buddha, encircled by censers cradling joss sticks, and other offerings such as fruit, bread, and flowers, is of course at the middle of thehall. The temple’s statue is white. In addition, behind the Buddha is a statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin.
