Surrounding Islands in Johor Bahru
Although Johor Bahru is close to the sea, the water quality is not very good. If you are thinking of engaging in water activities, we recommend Tioman Island, White Sand Island, Lawa Island, and Sibu Island. The first three need to take a ride at Mersing Jetty and the last one needs to be taken at Tanjung Leman Terminal.
1. Tioman Island: From Mersing Port to Tioman Island, there are 3 to 4 rides daily, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, but due to the tide, departure time and shifts will change every day. It is necessary to arrive at the terminal at least half an hour in advance, first and foremost, take your seat before they are all occupied, there is air conditioning to help with the hot weather.
The area is known for its dive sites, which have corals, sea fans and sea sponges, as well as shipwrecks. The island is covered in tropical rainforests, home to butterflies, lizards and monkeys. On the east coast, the Juara Turtle Project is a hatchery that protects and studies sea turtles.
2. Besar Island: The shipping schedule of Mersing to Belshay is generally from 12 noon to 12:30. The hotel will arrange boat transfers after you have made your booking. If you are taking the boat, you need to arrive at the pier at least half an hour in advance, and the fare is around MYR 95.
Apart from the handful of resorts, the island’s hundred or so inhabitants live in the remnants of the fishing villages scattered along the shoreline. To protect the prolific undersea life, Besar and the surrounding islands have been gazetted as a marine park. Snorkelling just off Besar’s shore or joining a snorkelling excursion to the surrounding islands is an excellent way to get to see the colourful marine life up close.
3. Rawa Island: Lawa Island is a private island of the royal family. The scenery is beautiful and the sea is clear, but there are only 2 hotels on the island. The hotel has its own speedboat to arrange transportation.
4. Sibu Island: Tanjung Leman Jetty is the closest to Sibu Island. It takes less than 30 minutes to get to the hotel and the hotel will tell you what time to take the boat.
