For those who are still unfamiliar with this new mall, here’s a refresher: The Mid Valley Southkey is JB’s largest integrated shopping mall and sogo modelled after Kuala Lumpur’s popular Swish Mid Valley Megamall. In addition to retail, the development of 2,5 mil sq. ft will also include “international class hotels and high-end residences” to be built over the next decade.
The tenants of the mall are also more luxurious than, say, the nearby R&F Mall, which opened earlier this year, to reflect the development’s on aspirations. Here are the top 10 things to do in Mid Valley JB.
1. Family Mart, Mid Valley (LG-020)
FamilyMart, one of the many iconic convenience stores that is the source of all our onigiri and oden fixes, will be no stranger to those who have ventured to Japan before. In addition, the store has rows and rows of Japanese snacks that you can’t get back to convenience stores in Singapore. The selection of onigiri has a myriad of flavours to make your tummy happy with options such as salted salmon, teriyaki chicken and tuna.
And if you’re looking for something more filling, here you can get a full course meal–with main meals like Katsu Curry Rice you can heat up and dessert choices like Matcha Parfait. For you to enjoy all the food at a wallet-friendly price, there is even a seating area. Try some of the Japanese oden, a kind of fish cake stew, before you leave. In Japan, the well-loved street food comes with two broths–Original and Tom Yum.
All you have to do is pick from your oden the ingredients you want, including Ajitsuke Tamago, fish balls and daikon. We’re just happy we don’t have to take an eight-hour plane ride to enjoy it all at Mid VAlley, Sogo.
2. Din by Din Tai Fung, Mid Valley (LG-005 & 006)
Many were known at Din Tai Fung to claim their undying love for the fried rice and XLBs. Din by Din Tai Fung is taking a new spin on the food that many of us know and love, being the first Din Tai Fung pork-free outlet right here in JB. Try out the Chicken Chop Fried Rice (RM28.30, ~S$9.30) that serves the famous pork chop fried rice as a worthy competitor.
While the rice is as savoury as it is, the fried chicken has been peppery and makes a delicious pairing. Even Sambal Chicken Xiao Long Baos (RM24.50, ~S$8.06) have the same shiokness as XLB but with a spice kick. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup (RM33.70, ~S$11.07) and the Lamb Xiao Long Baos (RM26.40, ~S$8.67) you won’t be able to find in Singapore are other special mentions.
3. HeyCha, Mid Valley (LG-046)
It’s not hard to miss HeyCha–just look out for the snaking queues and its bright neon light logo that serves as the background to many IG stories while we were here. Only available in Malaysia, with oranges, lemons, limes, cubed pineapples, peaches and watermelons, the store is best known for its Signature Fruit Tea (RM9.90, ~S$3.25).
Next to the noteworthy list is their Midnight Blue Tea (RM9.90, ~S$3.25)–a mixture of blue pea tea, calamansi, and lychee–our favourite part is how the drink transforms from blue to violet, making it a cool Boomerang snap.
No longer must be guilty of getting your bubble tea fixed–all their fruit teas use fresh ingredients with no artificial flavours. Those big on the brown sugar craze can go straight with Pearl (RM7.90, ~S$2.59) for the very own Brown Sugar Milk store. This has a generous drizzle down the sides of caramel brown sugar, creamy fresh milk, and freshly cooked pearls.
4. SOGO, Mid Valley (AT-1)
Some may recall the sogo that in the 90s Singapore once had a way back in Raffles City. While this department store of Takashimaya-esque has closed on our shores since then, you can hit the next nearest outlet in JB. You’ll easily kill off an hour of wandering around the place from beauty products to homeware goods. here it is the sogo picture you may review.
5. Say Nails Services, Mid Valley (S-045)
It can sometimes be quite expensive to get your nails done in Singapore, especially if you opt for a relish manicure. But you can get pampered as a royalty at cheaper prices at Say Nails Services–an express gel manicure here is just RM55, ~S$18.09. The salon also offers lash extension services and brow embroidery services.
6. Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul, Mid Valley (LG-017)
If we like to cross the causeway for one thing, it’s the food. Make your tummy happy by trying out some of the traditional desserts that have been around for six generations at Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul, a family-owned chain of shops. We knew the chendul here had to be pretty killer in order to last so long! The store also serves Milk Tea Chendul (RM7.50, ~S$2) as well as their Signature Chendul (RM6.10, ~S$2.47). If you’re a classic lover of milk tea, you should try it.
The mixture of rasped ice and milk tea was sweet without being too sweet and is a refreshing snack to have between shopping spreads. Don’t overlook the other main meals while here, such as the Penang Curry Mee (RM10.30, ~S$2.38). Depending on your spice preference, you can also choose how much chili to mix with the soup. Other dishes are traditional Penang tickets such as Assam Laksa (RM10.30, ~S$2.38) and Penang Prawn Mee (RM10.30, ~S$2.38). Enjoy it at Mid Valley Sogo!
7. Voga Vita Hair Salon, Mid Valley (S-043)
If you’re looking for more pampering, enjoy a trip to the Voga Vita Hair Salon. The salon uses products made from essential oils and pure extracts of plants–so you can be assured that there are no harmful chemicals in your locks. Here you can go for a simple wash and cut (RM70, ~S$23), or even go all out with a perm or rebound sash (RM320-380, ~S$105-125 for each).
8. Village Grocer, Mid Valley (AT-2)
Within the mall, Village Grocer is a mini village with a huge supermarket, a F&B outlet and a paper shop. For hours on end, both adults and children can be easily entertained just wandering around here. Walk into the stationery store, Czip Lee, and be fascinated by the colourful and vast space before you.
At the entrance, a large screen welcomes you with tutorials on calligraphy and DIY crafts, while different corners of the store display quirky t-shirts, papier mache animals, even an inking station where you can try using fountain pens. There is even a scheduled workshop corner for kids with weekly workshops such as teaching them in an engaging way new skill such as coding and science topics. At the Butcher’s Kitchen, meat-eaters will enjoy a meal serving a variety of German-inspired dishes.
This spot is perfect for larger groups as they have heartfelt sharing platforms that will not burn a hole in your wallets like the Wagyu Beef Sausage Rings (RM33.15, ~S$10.89) and Farmer’s Bratwurst (RM10.00, ~S$3.29). Enjoy it at Mid Valley Sogo!
9. YSL Beauty, (G-030)

The friendly staff here will also help you with whatever you need, whether it’s finding out which product is best for your skin type or finding out which shade of the foundation matches your skin tone.
